Introducing Josie Harrison

1 .Why did you join Cap?

I started playing tennis at 62 and as I will be retiring I thought what will retirement look like? I have known Alison Rakis from the Winter Club and she plays tennis. I asked Alison what she thought and Alison suggested taking lessons at the Tennis Centre so I did. She also suggested that I join Cap.

I’ve lived on the North Shore for 32 years, Cap is down the hill from my house, so I decided to join.

  1. What are you hoping to get out of your membership?

I’m a beginner, new to tennis and I love the game.  I’m hoping to improve my game, to meet people to play with and to have fun.

  1. What do you do when you’re not playing tennis?

I enjoy entertaining friends, socializing and riding my bike.

  1. What’s your favourite Band, what was your first concert?

I like Motown and I know that Queen isn’t Motown but they are my favourite band.  My first concert was David Bowie.

  1. If you could play doubles or hit with any player in the world who would it be?

Laughing, I’ve not played long enough to know any of the players.

Introducing Lorne and Sherry Kerr

Why did you join the Club?

  1. We joined the club to play with their daughter Ashley Chapman who is a member. The club is close to their home, so it’s very convenient.
  2. What are you hoping to get out of your membership?
  3. We enjoy playing social tennis (doubles) and we are looking forward to meeting people. While we enjoy competition, we don’t want to be driving to other clubs to play. (Interviewers note, I mentioned our in house leagues and both Sheri and Lorne thought that it would be fun.
  4. What aspects of the game do you find most appealing/ attractive challenging?

Lorne enjoys the strategic aspect of the game and Sheri finds the speed of double to be both challenging and fun.

  1. What’s your favourite band, what was your first concert?

Lorne’s first concert was Pink Floyd and Sheri’s was the Rolling Stones.  Pre Covid they went to see Pink Floyd when they last played in Vancouver. Their favourite music is Rock

  1. If you could play doubles or hit with any player in the world, who would it be?

Lorne would play with Shapovalov as he admires his style of play. Sheri chose Bianca Andreescu and Sabrina Williams as she thinks they are amazing women and tennis players.

Introducing Diane Chapman

  1. Why did you join Cap?

A friend and I decided that we wanted to take up tennis and our mutual friend, Alison Rekis, a Cap member suggested that we go to the NVTC and take lessons. Having done that for the past 2 years, I decided that I wanted to continue to play tennis outdoors during the summer. Again Alison played a role and suggested Cap. I thought  the club is 3 minutes from home and affordable. Why not join, so I did.

  1. What would you like to tell others about yourself?

I’m easy going!

  1. What are you hoping to get out of the club?

I’m a beginner so I’m interested in social tennis. I’ve participated in Howie’s Saturday clinic and really enjoyed it. I’m hoping to continue to improve and to meet people to play with.

  1. What do you do when you’re not playing tennis?

I’ve become a Grand Mother recently.  My daughter’s baby is 4 months old so I help her out. As well, (my husband’s in the background listening) I help him out as well, (laughing).

  1. What’s your favourite Band, what was your first Rock concert?

I’d have to say that my favourite band is The Beatles or The Doors, (I’m old). My first Rock concert was Iron Butterfly.

Introducing Karen Beattie

  1.  Why did you Join Capilano?
  • My son signed up for Lessons with Howie to start tennis. I decided to join Capilano at that time as some of my girlfriends are members and I would like to meet new players to play with also.

2.  What would you tell others about yourself?

  • That I am very forgetful and my friends all know that when it comes to keeping score in a game!

3.  What are you hoping to get out of your membership?

  • I would like to meet more people, and play more tennis. I have a very busy schedule with a lot of running around with my kids (13 yrs and 11 yrs old), but am flexible, sometimes I can play during the day, weekends and/or at night, but at the moment it is very dependent on my home schedule.

4.  When did you begin to play tennis, who introduced you to the game and what level player are you?

  • I started tennis about 2 years ago with lessons at the NV Tennis Centre. I like the exercise and prefer playing singles but do play doubles.  I actually just like to get out and hit the ball, rally back and forth

5.  What do you do when your not playing tennis?

  • I like to hike, bike, don’t like to run but I do it too.

6.  How would you describe your style of play?

  • I Just Like to Have FUN!

Introducing Richie Cannon

  1.  Why did you Join Capilano?

I want to see my Wife more!! – member Sue Cannon

2.  What would you tell others about yourself?

I like to have fun!  I am still competitive and enjoy tennis.

3.  What are you hoping to get out of your membership?

I would like to get out and play more.  I am a doubles player and am also thinking it might be fun to join into a tennis league?

4.  When did you begin to play tennis, who introduced you to the game and what level player are you?  Do you prefer singles or doubles?

I have played tennis, on and off, for about 9 years.  Sue introduced me to the game and we play when we are down in California with friends.  I am looking forward to playing on a  more steady basis, on a set day and time for example.

5.  What do you do when your not playing tennis?

I play both soccer and golf to stay fit.  We are also looking forward to become grandparents, my daughter is expecting our first granddaughter very soon!

6.  How would you describe your style of play?

I would have to say others are surprised that I can get to the ball faster that expected, must be the soccer in me!

Introducing Patrick Davies

  1.  Why did you join Capilano?

It was because Mario recruited me and it was the best thing I
ever did!
2.  What are you hoping to get out of your Membership?

I was not a member of a Club so it has been difficult to find
courts and to find people to play with. I have missed playing
Doubles and I wanted to find a consistent group of players.

3.  When did you begin to play tennis and what level are you?
 I guess it was with my parents. I played a lot of sports in my
youth but then focused on tennis in my late teens.   I have played in tournaments entered into a 4.5 but I really don’t like competitive tennis.

4.  How would you describe your style of play?
 I love tennis, am an aggressive player but I like to laugh a lot!

5.  What do you do when your not playing tennis?
 I work in a start-up company as an engineer. I love music and
sing bass as a member of the Vancouver Bach Choir. I enjoy
fitness in some form everyday, sometime running.

6.  Is there anything you would like to tell us about yourself?
 Well I don’t know, I would be interested to know what others
think? I know at the moment with my life, I am most pleasant
on the Court.
